Create Lasting Memories: Newborn Photography at Home

There is nothing quite like Humboldt Park Newborn Photography at home to capture the raw, beautiful emotions of becoming a family. The sweetest photography sessions are always with first-time parents; they are full to the brim with excitement. While experienced parents bring a wonderful seasoned love to a shoot, there is something so special about the very start of a journey—those first few days spent in a blur of awe at the new life you created.

A new way of life, a new pair of eyes. Life shifts tremendously after you become a parent. As a Chicago family photographer, I always leave my new-parent newborn sessions feeling so inspired and excited for the future.

A Sunny Humboldt Park Newborn Photography | Home documentary Session

This beautiful session took place at my clients’ bright and airy Humboldt Park home. It was a stunning, sunny day, which is a dream for newborn photography at home. We managed to capture the coolest shots of this gorgeous baby boy. I especially love focusing on the little details: the tiny fingers, the velvet-soft skin, and the quiet moments of them together as a new family of three.

Actually, they were a family of four! We had to include their cute pup. I don’t think the puppy liked me very much—which hurt my heart just a little, ha!—but including pets is one of the best parts of a lifestyle session. I always try to incorporate the architecture and “vibe” of a family’s home into the session to make the gallery feel personal and magical.

Why Choose a Humboldt Park Newborn Photography | Home documentary ?

Many parents ask why they should choose an in-home session over a studio. The answer is simple: comfort. When you opt for newborn photography at home, you have everything you need within arm’s reach. There is no stress about packing a diaper bag or timing the car ride around naps.

Furthermore, your home is the first chapter of your baby’s story. Capturing them in their nursery or snuggled on your living room sofa creates a sense of place that a studio simply cannot replicate. These photographs become a time capsule of your life exactly as it was when your little one arrived. This Humboldt Park Newborn Photography session was so special

Tips for a Successful At-Home Session

To get the most out of your session, I recommend the following:

    • Embrace Natural Light: We will likely spend most of our time in the rooms with the biggest windows.
    • Keep it Warm: Babies are happiest when it’s toasty! I recommend turning up the heat a few degrees before I arrive.
    • Neutral Tones: Soft, neutral colors help keep the focus on the baby’s delicate features.

Beyond the Pose: Why Hire a Chicago Documentary Maternity Photographer?

Let me be frank: I completely fall in love with the families I work with. However, as a Chicago documentary maternity photographer, my “Sun Up to Sunset” sessions are where I feel most connected to the art of storytelling. I recently got ahead of myself and published this family’s newborn session before their maternity session! But I was just so eager to share this journey.

Since the beginning of my photography career, I have been drawn to the idea of full-day sessions. As a photographer in the Chicago area, I’m not the first to do this—artists like Joy Prouty paved the way—but it is where my heart truly lives. The gist of these sessions is simple: stay strict to the documentary eye. You photograph life unposed, life as it unravels, and life as it becomes.

The Magic of a “Sun Up to Sunset” Session

In these sessions, I am there for the first cup of coffee and the final goodnight kiss. It is a lot of work, but it is incredibly rewarding. Between the laughter, conversations, and even the tears, I am snapping moments that will last well beyond our time here on earth. A day-in-the-life session is a time capsule of your current life.

What to Expect from Your Documentary Session

When you hire a Chicago documentary maternity photographer, you aren’t just getting a gallery of photos; you are getting a record of your existence. We capture:

The Evening Wind-Down: Bath time, bedtime stories, and the exhaustion of motherhood.

The Morning Routine: Making breakfast, the messy hair, and the quiet cuddles.

The Mid-Day Chaos: Playing in the yard, measuring height on the closet door, and the reality of toddler life.

    Why Documentary Style is Different

Most photography sessions are about the “best” version of yourself. But I believe your “real” version is actually the most beautiful. You don’t need to coordinate outfits or tell your kids to sit still. In fact, I prefer it when they don’t! The way a big brother-to-be pats the kitty cat or works on his bike tells a much deeper story than a posed portrait in a park ever could.

Frequently Asked Questions for a Chicago Documentary Maternity Photographer

Is a full day too long for my kids? Actually, it’s often easier! Kids get “camera fatigue” in 60-minute sessions because they feel the pressure to perform. In a full-day session with a Chicago documentary maternity photographer, I become part of the furniture. After the first hour, they forget I’m there and just go back to being themselves.

Do we need a clean house? Absolutely not. Your home is the backdrop of your life. The laundry on the couch and the dishes in the sink are part of this season of your life. As a Chicago documentary maternity photographer, I see the beauty in the “mess” because that mess is evidence of a life being lived.

What should we wear for a documentary session? Wear what you would normally wear on a Saturday. If that’s leggings and a t-shirt, great. If the kids want to wear their superhero capes all day, even better. The goal is to look back at these photos and recognize yourselves.

How to Prepare for a Full-Day Documentary Experience

Because these sessions are so long, preparation is different than a standard hour-long shoot. Here is how we make the magic happen:

    • Ignore the Camera: The first hour is the “ice breaker.” I’ll chat with you and the kids, but eventually, I want you to stop looking at me. Go about your day. Fold the laundry, play the board game, or take a nap.
    • Environment Matters, Not Perfection: Don’t feel the need to deep-clean. The stacks of books on your nightstand or the toys on the rug are the landmarks of your life right now.
    • Meal Times are Gold: Some of the best photos happen over messy pancakes or a family dinner. These are the “anchor points” of a family day.

A pregnant woman in a yellow floral dress walks on a dirt path, looking down, while a young boy rides a bicycle in the background amidst lush greenery.

    Creating a Legacy of Memories

As the oldest of four siblings, I am forever connecting moments in my head to what was. I don’t have to be told how special this work is! For many families, the “perfectly posed” portrait doesn’t tell the whole story. As a Chicago documentary maternity photographer, I want to give you the whole story—the messy, beautiful, chaotic reality of your love.

These “Sun Up to Sunset” sessions are a labor of love for me. I was there for breakfast and for the goodnight. It was a lot of work, but it was so rewarding to see how this family operates in their own “love bubble.” If you are looking for a Chicago documentary maternity photographer who will value your story as much as you do, I would love to chat.

The Art of the Everyday: At-Home Newborn Chicago Photography

As a photographer specializing in newborn sessions, I have documented countless precious moments. Each session is unique, with its own set of beautiful challenges. Specifically, I love the quiet rhythm of a home in transition. This at-home newborn Chicago photography session is proof that you don’t need a “perfect” house to create art.

Connection Over Perfection I think it is important to note that you can have a beautiful session even in a period of transition. You don’t need a Pinterest-ready nursery to book a session. Instead, you just need to show up as you are. Connection, love, and laughter are far more important than your decor. Consequently, these images feel like a real reflection of your life.

check out this family’s maternity session at the Oak Park conservatory it was such a beautiful option indoors and it was beautiful.

A toddler holding a stuffed animal and a pacifier looks curiously at the camera, while a baby lies in a crib nearby, gently reaching for the baby's face.

Why Choose At-Home Newborn Chicago Photography?

Choosing at-home newborn photographer allows your family to stay in your natural element. For example, siblings feel more relaxed in their own space. Parents can take a breath and simply be with their new addition. Moreover, the background of your real life adds a layer of depth that a studio cannot replicate.

Documenting Your Legacy Whether you are settled in your forever home or currently moving between spaces, your story is worth telling. Ultimately, these photographs are about the people in the frame.

    • The Collective Story: Perfect for those wanting a full, unhurried documentary experience.
    • The Motherhood Journey: A curated bundle ($1,499) that documents both the bump and the baby’s arrival.

A close-up of a baby resting on a person's arm, with a hand gently touching the baby's cheek. The setting features warm wooden flooring and soft clothing.

In conclusion, your family’s essence is found in your connection. Therefore, let’s focus on the love that fills the room, regardless of the walls around it. Photography is the portal to connection. I love being a Chicago Newborn Photographer and seeing families through my bundle session.

Lifestyle Newborn Photography in Aurora, IL

The newborn session of a beautiful baby boy in Aurora, IL, was truly special. As a newborn photographer in Aurora, IL, I get to witness families grow, but I cannot believe the Lundes are now a family of seven! Just two weeks after visiting this stunning home to welcome Finnian for his birth, I returned to capture the family a little more relaxed and settled into a routine.

A cozy room with children; one toddler is lying in a crib, hiding under a blanket, while three others explore around a dresser in the background.

Well, a “sorta” routine. I know the Lundes are very intentional, slowly paced people. While newborn sessions can be hectic—and even a little wild—we always manage to capture the beauty of it all. These boys are so lovely and always eager to show me their personalities. We’ve worked together enough now that I think they trust me to just “be.” They know I’m there to capture them as they are, without pushing for more than they can do. I always strive to be patient, letting moments unfold and staying ready to roll with the beauty of childhood.

What to Expect from an Aurora IL Newborn Photographer

Many parents ask what a session with a newborn photographer in Aurora, IL looks like when there are older siblings involved. My approach is always documentary-style. Instead of stiff poses, we focus on the connection. Whether it’s the boys peering into the crib or Kayla nursing quietly, these are the moments that define your “new normal.”

But back to this sweet little baby! How absolutely gorgeous does Kayla look? She was radiant when I arrived. Our lives are both so busy, and though we couldn’t be more different, we’ve always been able to flourish in friendship. She and Patrick are doing a phenomenal job raising kind-hearted, smart, and inquisitive boys.

Capturing the Beauty of a Large Family

Little Finnian, who looks like a perfect combination of Owen and Griffin, was the sweetest little thing. I think he’s going to add a bit of calmness to the bunch. But we’ll see—chaos is always acceptable, especially when it’s in front of my lens! If you are looking for a Chicago newborn photographer in Aurora, IL who embraces the “beautiful chaos” of a large family, I would love to tell your story.

Jefferson Park Baby Photographer: Baby Mara’s 9-Month Session

As a Jefferson Park baby photographer, I find that capturing babies is a unique experience. I first worked with Mara’s parents during their maternity session. Initially, they chose to push back their newborn session. I completely respect that decision. This season of life has been overwhelming for everyone. Recently, I finally had the honor to meet sweet baby Mara. She was absolutely gorgeous and full of smiles.

An Outdoor Start for a Jefferson Park Baby Photographer

We started our session at a favorite local park in Chicago. Specifically, we returned to the same location from their maternity photos. However, the mosquitoes were very active that evening. We realized quickly that we needed a new plan. Consequently, we decided to move the session to their nearby home. Furthermore, finding a flexible Jefferson Park baby photographer is important when nature does not cooperate.

Transitioning to a Lifestyle Session at Home

I did not mind the change at all. In fact, their beautiful bungalow was the perfect backdrop for my work. Capturing babies in their own space is always joyous. Because they are in a familiar place, their curiosity truly shines. Mara’s eyes were full of wonder. Additionally, every new experience was met with amazement.

As a chicago family photographer, I love seeing how families document these days. I noticed photographs displayed all over their home. Moreover, I could see Mara’s progression from a tiny infant to a little person. I hope this family remembers these days fondly. As a result of our move indoors, we captured some of my favorite nursing and crib moments.

    Documenting Milestones in Chicago

The days are long, but the years are very short. Therefore, I focus on “honesty over poses” in every session. Seeing Mara at nine months old was a treat. She is becoming such a vibrant little person. Finally, stay tuned for more milestones from this sweet girl!

Coincidentally, she is the mirror image of her big brother! Mom told me she felt like she gave birth to the same baby twice. Consequently, it is hilarious to see how similar sibling genes can be.

Toddler Fun with an Itasca IL Newborn Photographer

It can be a challenge to work with toddlers and a new baby simultaneously. However, I feel like those are my favorite types of sessions to document! Although toddlers can be difficult to pose, they are also so much fun to observe. I consider myself a baby person through and through. Specifically, by toddlerhood, a child’s whole personality is vibrant and 100% unique.

It often takes extra work to get a toddler to warm up to a stranger in their home. But sweet big brother William was very open and excited for me to be there. In addition, he was eager to show off his new sister to the camera. Finding an Itasca IL newborn photographer who understands the wild energy of a toddler is key to a successful, stress-free session.

  • Chicago Self Portrait Artist | Tips for Movement in Photos

Chicago Self Portrait Artist | Tips for Movement in Photos

Hey guys! Today I am sharing some images from this spring. I took a little time to work as a Chicago self portrait artist, photographing myself and my kiddos enjoying one of our favorite things: our little outdoor swing. My son suggested the swing, and since then, I’ve added a rebozo swing as well.

What I wanted to achieve in these images was intentional movement. Fluidity doesn’t always come naturally in self-portraits because you are busy setting up the shot. Sometimes, anticipating the movement makes it feel forced. I knew I had to encourage the fun to keep us from looking stiff. If you’ve seen my recent Oak Park birth photography post, you know how much I value documenting raw, unposed energy.

A child and an adult walk along a pathway beside a house, surrounded by greenery and blooming trees.

Capturing Movement as a Chicago Self Portrait Artist

If you want more movement and fluidity in your own images, here are my top three tips:

    1. Pick an easy and fun activity. Jump in there with the kids! If you use a timer like I do, you only have 10 seconds to set up the shot. While a remote might be easier, I always seem to lose them. Try doing the movement once or twice before you press the shutter to get into the flow. This creates a much more documentary lifestyle feel.
    2. Say no to a shallow depth of field. Focus is much easier to maintain with movement at f/5.6 or even f/11. Seriously, try it! This allows you to capture yourself and your environment completely without losing sharpness. As a Chicago self portrait artist, I find that the environment tells just as much of the story as the subject.
    3. Let go of perfection. This is my number one tip. When you are learning, your “failures” are actually your best teachers. If your mistakes push you to create more, it means being in your photographs is truly important to you. Don’t worry about every hair being in place; focus on the feeling.

Walking through the streets, I was immediately drawn to the local art. Because the famous mural wall belongs to West Town Bakery, we had the perfect colorful backdrop for our morning. Their pastries are just as beautiful as their art, making it a must-stop spot for any family wandering the neighborhood. This family in front of those textures was just the cherry on top.

Documenting families in their element is what I love most. Whether we are exploring city murals or capturing an at-home newborn lifestyle session, the goal is always the same: to create a visual legacy. While I often work as a River Forest family photographer, the vibrant streets of West Town offer a different kind of magic.

Every family has a unique rhythm, and my job is to find it. By leaning into the unscripted moments, we create images that feel like a true reflection of your life. If you want to learn more about how I work, you can explore The Experience to see my philosophy on unposed storytelling. I hope you enjoy this session as much as I enjoyed capturing it!

Itasca Summer Family Session: A Full Circle Moment

One of the greatest joys of my work is watching a family grow over the years. Specifically, I originally took this sweet boy’s newborn photos. Therefore, I was thrilled to see him again for a beautiful Itasca summer family session. Don’t you love when things come full circle? Now, he’s sporting some quite peculiar and most beautiful red locks of hair. I honestly couldn’t believe the transformation!

The Magic of Summer Clouds and Tall Grass

We couldn’t have asked for a better day. While many people look for clear blue skies, a great Itasca summer family session often benefits from dramatic clouds. These clouds acted as a natural diffuser. Consequently, the rich, earthy colors of the landscape really popped without any harsh shadows. This created a creamy, dreamy light that is ideal for lifestyle portraits.

Additionally, the tall grass at this location added a beautiful layer of movement. There is something so nostalgic about a toddler wandering through waist-high greenery. During this Itasca summer family session, the deep emerald tones of the summer grass provided a stunning contrast. The green background made the boy’s vibrant red hair look intentional and timeless. Furthermore, the way the wind caught the grass helped create those “unposed” moments that I strive for as a photographer.

    Documenting Your Visual Legacy

As a Chicago documentary-style photographer, I thrive in environments where kids can be themselves. This Itasca summer family session allowed me to utilize beautiful open spaces. In these settings, the “visual legacy” of a family can unfold naturally. We focused on a palette of natural greens and warm skin tones. Most importantly, we kept the focus on the human connection.

If you are new here, you can learn more about my approach here. On that page, I share how I focus on honesty over poses. I hope you enjoy this gallery!

River Forest Woods Session: A Little Time in the Sun

If you are looking for the perfect natural backdrop, a River Forest woods session offers some of the most beautiful light in the Chicago area. Recently, an amazing company reached out for a commercial lifestyle shoot in this very location. Consequently, I headed out to the lush greenery of River Forest, IL. This town is such a gem for photographers. Specifically, the tall trees and filtered sunlight provide an ideal environment for capturing families in their most natural state.

    Capturing Love in the Greenery

The family for this River Forest woods session was absolutely stunning. Their little baby was incredibly chill and easy-going, which made my job a breeze. Every time she needed a little extra encouragement, her dad would play “Baby Shark.” Therefore, we were able to capture plenty of genuine smiles and happy moments.

As a Chicago Family Photographer one of the most important aspects of my job is ensuring I capture families in their truth. Furthermore, I want their love to be reflected 100% in the final gallery. It was so much fun to document their connection in such a serene environment. I was also very grateful for the cooler, sun-drenched day. In Illinois, we must always be mindful of ticks and other bugs. However, the light was so perfect that it was well worth the extra precautions.
