Downtown Chicago Birth Story | Evangelista-The Adri Photo Co.

“My mother groaned, my father wept, / into the dangerous world I leapt.” William Blake. The power of women never ceases to amaze me. I especially feel this when documenting a downtown Chicago birth as intense as this one. This session was the longest in my portfolio. It was full of beautiful drama and a baby boy who truly made an entrance.

The Setting: A Downtown Hospital Story

There is a specific energy that comes with a Chicago birth. Outside the hospital windows, the city continues its frantic pace—sirens, traffic, and the hum of the Loop. But inside the labor and delivery suite, time seems to stand still. I watched as the light shifted over the skyscrapers, casting long shadows across the room while this mama worked through each surge. Capturing a birth as a Chicago birth photographer allows me to juxtapose the massive scale of the city with the intimate, quiet strength of a woman bringing life into the world.

    The Emotion: Strength and Surrender

She had a plan, and she fulfilled it with such grace. As a photographer, I am often struck by the moment of “the shift”—when the room goes from intense focus to an overwhelming wave of relief. This downtown Chicago birth ended with tears of joy that felt like a huge wave of love washing over everyone present. Every hour of that long journey was worth it the moment he arrived. It was a reminder of why I love documentary birth photography; these are the stories that deserve to be told exactly as they happened.

    Planning Your Downtown Chicago Birth

Preparing for a downtown Chicago birth often involves a lot of logistics, but the photography shouldn’t be one of them. Whether you are delivering at Prentice, Rush, or University of Chicago, my goal is to remain a “fly on the wall,” documenting the strength and quiet moments that often go unnoticed in the whirlwind of labor. This session took place at Prentice Women’s Hospital, one of my favorite spots for a Chicago birth photographer story because of the incredible natural light.”

Chicago Birth Photography Story | Lunde Family

Every Chicago birth photography story is a testament to the raw power and strength of a mother. My journey with the Lunde family was a whirlwind of anticipation, following three weeks of prodromal labor. While I have documented many arrivals across the West Suburbs, this specific story was defined by a beautiful surrendering to the process and a remarkably quick three-hour delivery.

“When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.”
    ―
    Audre Lorde

Why Document Your Chicago Birth Photography Story?

Choosing to have a Chicago birth photographer capture you, allows you to remain fully present in one of the most transformative moments of your life. Instead of worrying about a camera, you can focus on the power of your body and the support of your partner. Furthermore, these documentary images act as a permanent record of the strength you displayed and the first breath your baby took. As a result, you aren’t just getting photos; you are preserving a legacy. If you are interested in a similar experience, you can view my birth portfolio here.

    Honoring the Birth Process

A Chicago birth photography story captures more than just the delivery. It documents the quiet strength a mother finds during the long hours of labor. For the Lunde family, the journey through prodromal labor felt like a mental and physical marathon. Furthermore, witnessing a mother move from uncertainty to complete power is incredible. I find deep inspiration in a quick, three-hour active labor. As a documentary photographer, I preserve these transitions. I want you to look back and see the bravery you embodied.

    Planning Your Birth Story

You might plan a home birth or a hospital delivery at a facility like Prentice Women’s Hospital. Either way, a dedicated storyteller helps your partner focus entirely on you. As a result, I capture every touch, every look of encouragement, and every first breath. You can stay in the moment while I preserve the legacy. If you want to document your own unique journey, please reach out to discuss your vision.

Hanover Park Maternity Photos | Sarah’s Home Birth Journey

Creating these Hanover Park maternity photos for Sarah was such a heartfelt experience. There are truly no words for the beauty and connection of this family. I loved being the Chicago Maternity photographer who captured these beautiful images.

Sarah is expecting her second child, and they are planning a home birth—I am so incredibly honored to say that I’ll be there to capture that entire journey for them. How cool is that?

I first met this family during a nursing session I hosted for local moms. Breastfeeding is so near and dear to my heart, and it felt like the perfect way to connect with women in my community. Sarah brought along her sweet baby boy then, and seeing him again, I can tell he is just as sweet as ever. He is clearly so ready to be a big brother.

Capturing Authenticity with Hanover Park Maternity Photos

As a specialist in unposed, soulful storytelling, I love documenting the quiet, anticipation-filled chapters of a family’s story. Sarah’s session in the suburbs was a beautiful reflection of this. Notably, I first met this family through complimentary nursing sessions I offered for local moms. Since breastfeeding is a topic so near and dear to my heart, it felt like a natural way to connect with my community.

Sarah brought along her sweet baby boy, who is clearly so excited to become a big brother. Although this specific session felt a bit rushed due to the unpredictable weather, I am so pleased with the images we captured. Fortunately, the overcast skies provided a soft, cinematic light that perfectly suited their laid-back and awesome energy.

Furthermore, these portraits serve as the perfect ‘sneak peek’ into the next chapter I get to document for them. Specifically, transitioning from their maternity portraits to their birth session allows me to tell a complete and honest story of their homecoming. Ultimately, seeing a family grow through my lens is the greatest part of my work.

If you are interested in a similar experience, please feel free to browse my maternity photography portfolio (Internal Link). Additionally, for those looking for beautiful natural spots in the area, I highly recommend checking out Mallard Lake Forest Preserve (Outbound Link) for stunning, scenic backdrops. These trails provide the perfect setting for a quiet morning session.

In conclusion, I cannot wait to capture the rest of Sarah’s story. Ultimately, these unposed moments are the ones that carry the most weight as the years pass. Take a look at their session below.”

Naperville family lifestyle photographer | A Day of Play

Being a Naperville family lifestyle photographer has taught me that the most beautiful days are often the ones where the ‘plan’ completely falls apart. There is something so honest about a family just being together without the pressure of a perfect itinerary.

I truly loved this day. It was one of those August afternoons where the heat finally starts to soften and everything feels gold. We actually arrived at the park much later than we intended, which meant we missed the window to hang out in the gated kids’ section. But honestly? I think the kids enjoyed it more this way. They had the freedom to just run, explore the open grass, and be themselves.

Storytelling with a Naperville Family Lifestyle Photographer

Since this was back in August, I’m still playing a bit of catch-up with my archives. Sometimes life moves faster than the shutter, and I find myself with so many stories still waiting to be told. The time difference between the moment and the memory can make the details a little fuzzy, but the feeling of the day always stays.

What I remember most about this specific afternoon was the light. It was absolutely beautiful—the kind of light that makes you want to stop and just watch the shapes it creates in the frame. I spent most of the session trying to catch those shadows and the way the sun hit the kids as they moved through the park.

Being a Naperville family lifestyle photographer isn’t just about the ‘perfect’ portrait; it’s about the exploration. It’s about how a simple trip to a park becomes a memory of running through open spaces. If you want to see more of these unscripted stories, feel free to look through my family portfolio.

For families looking for their own space to run, I always recommend exploring the Naperville Riverwalk for some of the best sunset light in the area.

I’m so glad I finally got to sit down and share these. Take a look at the shapes and the light from our day below.”

Hanover Park Family Photos | The Lunde Family

This sweet family is soon welcoming a third boy, and capturing their story through Hanover Park family photos is always such an effortless joy. They make my job as a documentary photographer so easy! Since we were working around nap times for this session, mom brought along some raisins as a little bribe—and they worked like a charm to keep the energy fun and light.

The second image captures the child with a thoughtful expression while holding a finger to their mouth. Capturing Authentic Hanover Park Family Photos

There is something so bittersweet about expecting a third child; knowing your whole world is about to change as you become outnumbered by little ones. I loved capturing these final moments as a family of four before their new bundle arrives. We had such a blast exploring together—I hope they enjoy these nostalgic images as much as I do. I love capturing growing families as a Maternity photographer in Chicago.

A family of four spending time together in a grassy area, with two children playing and interacting with their parents, who are sitting on a colorful quilt. The scene captures a moment of togetherness and joy.

There is a beautiful, quiet magic in documenting a family right on the edge of a big change. For the Lunde family’s latest session, we captured Hanover Park family photos that were all about real connection and unscripted play. Even with the challenge of nap schedules (shoutout to the raisins for saving the day!), the result was a gallery full of genuine, unposed moments.

Transitioning to a family of five is such a milestone. It was an honor to document the raw beauty of their current dynamic before their third son joins the crew. These images feel like a nostalgic keepsake of this specific chapter, and I’m so excited to share this adventure with them. My editing has changed so much, I love how cooler tones these are but how different. This location also has been such a staple in my work, I love the tall grass. The water and the trees, all suit so well towards my documentary style of Photography. I love sharing stories.
