The North Shore offers a specific kind of magic. Historic architecture meets the vast horizon of Lake Michigan. As an Evanston Lighthouse family photographer, I find this spot grounding and ethereal. The light seems to linger longer here. It catches the lake breeze and the unscripted laughter of a family at play.

A Yearly Tradition: Evanston Lighthouse Family Photography

This session was particularly special because I have had the honor of documenting this family’s story for several years now. Our journey started with a lifestyle session at their beautiful Evanston home, and now it has become a cherished tradition to gather here at the lighthouse to capture their daughters’ growth. There is something so rewarding about seeing how much has changed from one year to the next, yet seeing that their bond remains just as vibrant.

Laughter, Exploration, and a Dalmatian

The girls are at such a wonderful age where the world is one big playground. They love to explore the grassy knolls surrounding the lighthouse just as much as they love running along the shoreline. We spent our time chasing the light between the historic stone walls and the beach, letting the girls lead the way. Being an Evanston Lighthouse family photographer is fun because this location is incredibly versatile. With tall grass, sandy walkways and of course the beach itself.

Of course, no session for this family would be complete without their Dalmatian. Including the family dog is a non-negotiable for me—pets are such a massive part of the family story. Watching their pup navigate the beach alongside the girls added that extra layer of “real life” that I strive for in my hybrid documentary style. Whether it’s playing in the sand or exploring the trails near the Grosse Point Lighthouse, these are the moments that truly matter.

Pro tip for the North Shore: Lake Michigan creates its own micro-climate. Even if it’s warm in Forest Park, the lighthouse can be 10 degrees cooler with a brisk breeze. I always suggest bringing a cinematic knit sweater or a stylish blanket to keep the girls cozy during those lakeside moments. I always arrive a little earlier since the parking is to be paid for. However on cold months you will find plenty of parking but summer is busy.

Denver offered so many beautiful backdrops for our family. Specifically, we spent our days wandering through parks and exploring the city’s unique energy. Finding Magic in the Ordinary

We spent the afternoon capturing the little things that make a family whole. Specifically, we looked for the quiet glances and the spontaneous laughter. There is something so magical about the light in Darien during the late summer. As a Darien IL family photographer, I find myself drawn back to Waterfall Glen time and time again. While many people flock to the falls, I prefer the quiet, unscripted moments we find in the surrounding prairies.

Specifically, the Potempa family handled our early start with such grace. Ultimately, the success of a session depends on the family’s willingness to be present and playful. Because they trusted my vision, we were able to pivot from the crowded waterfall area to a secluded “little patch of grass.” Consequently, we captured the kind of honest, gummy-smiled joy that only happens when a baby feels completely at ease.

I originally planned to incorporate the actual falls at Waterfall Glen into our session. However, we changed our plans last minute and pivoted to a little patch of grass instead. Wentworth Family: A Lincoln Square Family Photographer Story

The first time we tried to schedule this session, the Chicago weather had other plans, and we lost our light before we could even begin. Thankfully, our second attempt was gifted with one of those incredibly warm, golden fall days. That makes being a Lincoln Square family photographer the best job in the world.

Initially, we hadn’t planned on shooting indoors. However, I am so incredibly thankful the Wentworths invited me into their beautiful home. Why I Love Being a Lincoln Square Family Photographer

After we soaked up the indoor light, we headed out to explore. Lincoln Square has a distinct, nostalgic charm. I love the local shops near Giddings Plaza and the quiet, tree-lined streets. We eventually made our way to the nearby park so baby S could play in her favorite place.
