The North Shore offers a specific kind of magic. Historic architecture meets the vast horizon of Lake Michigan. As an Evanston Lighthouse family photographer, I find this spot grounding and ethereal. A Yearly Tradition: Evanston Lighthouse Family Photography

This session was particularly special because I have had the honor of documenting this family’s story for several years now. Our journey started with a lifestyle session at their beautiful Evanston home, and now it has become a cherished tradition to gather here at the lighthouse to capture their daughters’ growth. There is something so rewarding about seeing how much has changed from one year to the next, yet seeing that their bond remains just as vibrant.

Laughter, Exploration, and a Dalmatian

The girls are at such a wonderful age where the world is one big playground. They love to explore the grassy knolls surrounding the lighthouse just as much as they love running along the shoreline. We spent our time chasing the light between the historic stone walls and the beach, letting the girls lead the way. Being an Evanston Lighthouse family photographer is fun because this location is incredibly versatile. With tall grass, sandy walkways and of course the beach itself.

Of course, no session for this family would be complete without their Dalmatian. Including the family dog is a non-negotiable for me—pets are such a massive part of the family story. Watching their pup navigate the beach alongside the girls added that extra layer of “real life” that I strive for in my hybrid documentary style. Whether it’s playing in the sand or exploring the trails near the Grosse Point Lighthouse, these are the moments that truly matter.

Pro tip for the North Shore: Lake Michigan creates its own micro-climate. Even if it’s warm in Forest Park, the lighthouse can be 10 degrees cooler with a brisk breeze. I always suggest bringing a cinematic knit sweater or a stylish blanket to keep the girls cozy during those lakeside moments. I always arrive a little earlier since the parking is to be paid for. However on cold months you will find plenty of parking but summer is busy.

After my sessions I always stop for a latte. My favorite Evanston coffee shops are Collectivo and Cupitol coffee. I like to work from both of these spots, depending on how much time I have.

Stepping away from the Chicago hustle to photograph a wedding in the oh-so-charming Kohler, Wisconsin, was an absolute dream. Being a wedding photographer in Chicago is fantastic. However, heading out to Wisconsin for unique stories like this is a breath of fresh air. Consequently, the drive up was lovely as I watched the busy city turn into green fields.

`Your Wisconsin Intimate Wedding Photographer in Kohler`

Kohler is like a real-life fairytale. In fact, everything is so pretty that it feels like a dream. The wedding spot was a secret garden bursting with color. For example, roses were everywhere in pinks and reds. Additionally, the peonies were showing off their big, fluffy blooms. The smell was like walking into a flower shop. Therefore, I was so excited to start my work.

Why I Love Being a Wisconsin Intimate Wedding Photographer

I soon met the stars of the show—the bride and groom! These two were sunshine personified. Their smiles were infectious, and you could feel the love between them. Furthermore, they decided to walk down the aisle together. This felt perfectly equal and united. As a result, it told their story of entering married life as a team. As a Wisconsin intimate wedding photographer, those are the moments that make my heart sing.

Wedding day arrived, and the weather was perfect! The sun was shining, and the garden looked breathtaking. Meanwhile, guests started arriving, and you could feel the excitement in the air. The ceremony was very moving. Seeing the couple stroll hand in hand was a powerful symbol. Their vows were genuine; consequently, you could feel the weight of every word. Ultimately, the natural light through the trees created pure magic.

Capturing Candid Moments and Joy

After they said “I do!”, the garden turned into a relaxed party. I loved wandering around and snapping candid moments. This included huge hugs and bursts of laughter. Indeed, that’s the real beauty of an intimate wedding. Specifically, all those genuine connections shine through when the guest list is small. Because of this, every photo feels more personal.

Golden Hour Portraits in the Garden

The portraits were stunning with that incredible garden backdrop. The bride and groom were glowing and very comfortable together. Finally, the golden hour light bathed the garden in a warm, dreamy filter. We had so much fun exploring every spot. In conclusion, this day was a beautiful reminder of why I love my job. Capturing love in such a peaceful setting is truly good for the soul.

Documentary Pregnancy Portraits with Pets

Their dog, Kip, was such a sweetheart during the shoot. Despite his old age, he was able to explore the fields and be a functional part of this Jefferson Park maternity photographer session. Including him was essential to me. Specifically, I believe that pets are a vital part of the family legacy. This is especially true during major life transitions like a first pregnancy.

Navigating a Pandemic Pregnancy in Chicago

During our time together, we discussed what it meant to be pregnant during this unique pandemic era. Becca shared how her family threw Facebook group showers and used FaceTime to stay connected. Additionally, family members are driving into the city since they are both from outside of Chicago.

It is a completely different experience, yet her positivity was simply the best. In fact, it is powerful to keep such an amazing perspective on life. I wish I could accurately capture her glow. She was truly the most radiant I have ever seen. Ultimately, I cannot wait to photograph her beautiful baby girl soon.

The Strength of Labor at Prentice Hospital

Birth is always a team effort. This beautiful couple worked together with a lovely goal in mind. Specifically, they were ready to meet sweet little Miss A. The funny thing about birth is how unpredictable it can be. For this experience, everything seemed to happen very quickly. However, the pushing phase was a prolonged state for this mama. Furthermore, her absolute grace shone brightly throughout the entire process. As a birth story photographer, I am constantly amazed by the resilience of women.

Documentary Storytelling in the Waukegan Area

During our session in the Waukegan area, big sister completely filled me in on all the amazing things she learns with her mom at home. She deeply loves nature and bugs. Specifically, she had to point out to me not to destroy the milkweed necessary for Monarch butterflies. I was stomping around in this beautiful field trying to find the perfect light when she gave me that gentle reminder.

Consequently, right after her warning, I fell into a hole! It was hilarious and made for such a great, honest session. As a North Shore family photographer, I live for these unscripted moments that happen when we just let kids be themselves in nature. Furthermore, these memories are the ones that build a true visual legacy for a family.

Documentary Storytelling at a Wheaton Nursery

Their story actually began in a tiny apartment not far from this local nursery. Consequently, it was fitting that we returned for a tree farm session to document their latest chapter. I also want to give a huge shout-out to the owners of this place; we are so grateful for their inviting ways. They picked a tree then headed for some indoor warmth, a cup of joe, and hot chocolate for the kids. In fact, these “in-between” moments are where the real magic happens.
