As a Fulton Market proposal photographer, I get to witness some of the biggest moments of people’s lives, and this one was a little loud and a little quiet. He had been planning it for weeks, and She had no idea that an evening in the West Loop was about to turn into one of the best nights of their life.
I’m a love is love photographer, which means every couple who walks into my work is celebrated exactly as they are. No matter who you love, that love deserves to be documented with the same joy, honesty, and care as any other love story, and this couple made that easy. As a Fulton Market proposal photographer, I stand just far enough away that the moment stays theirs, but close enough to catch every reaction. That’s what “Honesty Over Poses” means to me. I’m not here to direct a perfect moment. I’m here to document the real one.

Why Fulton Market works so well for a proposal
Fulton Market has everything a couple could want for a Chicago proposal. The brick warehouses, murals, and string lights give you a backdrop that feels city-cool without feeling staged. It’s easy to walk, full of great places to celebrate afterward, and the light in the late afternoon is gorgeous.
How the proposal happened
The session took place on the Greenline platform in Fulton Market. I truly thought that it was such a fun location, but I was worried I would somehow miss it. My fear almost came true .I think the nerves got to him and he got down on one knee faster than I expected. Because I was already in place as a hidden photographer, never saw me coming. The first few seconds of shock, laughter, and tears are always my favorite part to photograph.
He got down on one knee so fast, I was glad I was there ahead of time to set my camera exposure correctly and be ready. She really had no clue, but as soon as she saw my face and camera she laughed so hard. After the big question we went to a local bar to celebrate and the fun didn’t stop. They are truly so in love they made my job effortless.

Planning a surprise proposal?
If you’re thinking about proposing in Chicago, here are a few things that help:
Pick a time with good light. Golden hour is usually the best bet, and your photographer can help you choose the exact window.
Choose a spot with some breathing room. A view and a little privacy make a big difference.
Have a cover story. A dinner reservation or a “photo for the family” works well for getting your partner to the right place.
Tell your photographer everything. Details like the route, the timing, and your partner’s habits help me stay hidden and ready.

I photograph proposals, engagements, weddings, and elopements throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, and I’m proud to be an LGBTQ+ inclusive photographer. If you’re planning a surprise proposal and want it documented honestly, I’d love to hear about it. Reach out through my contact page and tell me your story. You can also see more of my work in my wedding and couples galleries.
