Due to a specific test that came back positive, we had to move from a home birth setting to the hospital. If you have ever made a birth plan, you know how much you set your heart on specific outcomes. Consequently, you often have to mourn those quick changes when things fall out of your control. The Experience of an Edgewater Birth Photographer

When I arrived at the apartment, Hannah was spending time in the bathroom, challenge-lit by a single candle. In moments like this, where my lens struggles to find the subject, I choose to freelens. Because I trust that thin slice of focus, I am able to capture the raw emotion of the room. It reminded me of stories I have read before of women birthing in quiet, sacred spaces. Clearly, she craved the coziness of that room, and it seemed to soothe her during labor.

I also witnessed a beautiful togetherness between the two of them. As a Chicago birth photographer, seeing a couple move with such synchronicity is a mighty thing to witness. Eric was a phenomenal birth partner. However, Hannah’s vigor and courage were the true stars of the show. She moved that baby down by trusting her body and allowing herself to be completely vulnerable.

Perhaps there is nothing but vulnerability allowed at home births, and that is truly the beauty of them. My job is to capture these fleeting moments. Oh, what a privilege it was to be present as a home birth storyteller in Chicago during this amazing overnight labor. This was the first time I joined a family through the quiet hours of the night, and Angela’s strength was truly awe-inspiring. She was one of those incredibly peaceful birthers; she totally blew me away with the way she rocked this birth.

Specifically, to say it was eventful and beautiful would be an understatement. There was chaos and so much uncertainty when it came to getting the water ready for the birth. But then, that sweet baby girl emerged and nothing else mattered. Consequently, the mood shifted from intense focus to pure joy in an instant.
