    There’s something about a cold Chicago morning when the sun actually shows up. Light pours through floor-to-ceiling condo windows, there’s no agenda, and nowhere to be. That’s exactly what we had for this Streeterville newborn session and honestly, as a Chicago newborn photographer, I’m still thinking about it. That kind of light makes everything feel softer, which is exactly what a brand new family deserves.

    Their First Baby, Their First Days

    This was their first, and everything that comes with that showed up right there in the room. Mom held him so carefully. Dad’s hand found her back at the crib without even thinking about it. Those aren’t posed moments they just happen naturally, and my job is to stay quiet enough to catch them.

    Baby was wide-eyed and alert for most of our time together. Those blue eyes, that little red hair peeking out from his white knit bonnet I could have photographed his face for hours. Meanwhile, mom was radiant in the most beautiful navy dress, glowing against all that creamy window light. She was exhausted and stunning and so present. I truly hope she sees herself the way I saw her through my lens.

    Why Documentary Style is Different

    Most photography sessions are about the “best” version of yourself. But I believe your “real” version is actually the most beautiful. You don’t need to coordinate outfits or tell your kids to sit still. In fact, I prefer it when they don’t! The way a big brother-to-be pats the kitty cat or works on his bike tells a much deeper story than a posed portrait in a park ever could.

    Is a full day too long for my kids? Actually, it’s often easier! Kids get “camera fatigue” in 60-minute sessions because they feel the pressure to perform.     Because these sessions are so long, preparation is different than a standard hour-long shoot. Here is how we make the magic happen:

    • Ignore the Camera: The first hour is the “ice breaker.” I’ll chat with you and the kids, but eventually, I want you to stop looking at me. Go about your day. Fold the laundry, play the board game, or take a nap.
    • Environment Matters, Not Perfection: Don’t feel the need to deep-clean. The stacks of books on your nightstand or the toys on the rug are the landmarks of your life right now.
    • Meal Times are Gold: Some of the best photos happen over messy pancakes or a family dinner. These are the “anchor points” of a family day.

    An Outdoor Start for a Jefferson Park Baby Photographer

    We started our session at a favorite local park in Chicago. Specifically, we returned to the same location from their maternity photos. However, the mosquitoes were very active that evening. We realized quickly that we needed a new plan. Consequently, we decided to move the session to their nearby home. Furthermore, finding a flexible Jefferson Park baby photographer is important when nature does not cooperate.

    Transitioning to a Lifestyle Session at Home

    I did not mind the change at all. In fact, their beautiful bungalow was the perfect backdrop for my work. Capturing babies in their own space is always joyous. Because they are in a familiar place, their curiosity truly shines. Mara’s eyes were full of wonder. Additionally, every new experience was met with amazement.

    As a chicago family photographer, I love seeing how families document these days. I noticed photographs displayed all over their home. Moreover, I could see Mara’s progression from a tiny infant to a little person. I hope this family remembers these days fondly. As a result of our move indoors, we captured some of my favorite nursing and crib moments.

I get to use my baby fever to make beautiful images for my clients , I have learned that the most beautiful moments are the ones that happen in the quiet in-betweens. Consequently, this session became a natural extension of the family’s own rhythm.     Our time together felt entirely effortless. However, Dad is still working on his comedic timing! Allyson and I shared a laugh as he tried to recall a new joke. Similarly, I hope to hear an update on his storytelling progress during our next session.     I’ve seen two of their stunning homes and have watched the kids go through various changes. Now they’ve added an adorable pup! I always say that Matt won the wife lottery, but you can see from these images that they are all so beyond lucky to have each other. I cannot stress enough how welcoming and lovely they are. Getting to catch up and see the brand-new adventures they’ve made is so much fun.

    Miss Z + E make me jealous for my own little Zoe; I know she wishes she had a sister. I myself had two, but they came almost a decade after me. It is also crazy to see just how tall Mr. A got, close to being over six feet. He will absolutely surpass his dad soon!

    A Sweet Goodbye to Summer

    Yesterday felt like a sweet goodbye to summer. As a documentary storyteller in Chicago, I felt an overwhelming need to capture these last moments for my own kids. Specifically, I wanted to freeze the feeling of this season before the school year shifted our rhythm entirely. I turned on the sprinkler for just fifteen minutes and simply documented their joy. But let’s be honest, there were also plenty of moments of them fighting for the best spot near the water.

    Consequently, this transition feels heavier than most. After this summer, I no longer have a kid at home to keep me busy during the day. There is so much change ahead for our family. Our schedules are getting full, and so are the backpacks.

    Next week is the first day of school for my littlest as she starts Pre-K. I know she’s going to love it; she is truly one of the most extroverted kids I know. Ultimately, I look forward to hearing all of her new stories, even though change is never easy. Nonetheless, we just have to keep moving forward.

    Traveling Family Photographer Chicago | Teaching & Mentoring

    I taught for the first time! I photographed a real family in their actual home in front of over 20 other photographers. To say I felt nervous is an understatement. As a traveling family photographer from Chicago, I usually work in intimate settings. However, having a crowd of peers watching my every move added a new level of pressure. I even gave the mama, Cate, the wrong date!

    Specifically, this mistake could have caused a catastrophe. Cate had cleaners over to prepare for the next day. Despite my error, she handled the situation with incredible grace. Ultimately, mistakes happen in life. I pride myself on rolling with the punches. As fate would have it, my snafu worked out perfectly. Cate’s grandfather fell ill that weekend. By shooting early, she gained the freedom to be with her family during a tough time. I feel beyond grateful for the time they gave us.

    The Heart of a Traveling Family Photographer from Chicago

    During this session, I kept calling my work “hybrid”—a mix of documentary and lifestyle. However, I have since officially added the title of Rhythmic Storytelling to my work. Because I need my images to make sense to me, I look for the natural cadence of a family’s love. Whether I am teaching a workshop or working as a traveling family photographer from Chicago, that rhythm is what I’m sticking to.

    Consequently, even when the light is “all over the place” and the ISO is set to 5000, the soul of the session remains intact. It was chaos, and I probably forgot a million things I wanted to say as a teacher, but it was an enlightening experience. They were beautiful, and their love could be felt in every corner of their home. Such a beautiful example about what it means to be a Chicago Family photographer who travels.
