There are neighborhoods in Chicago that feel like they were built for photography. The Gold Coast is one of them. The limestone townhouses, the tree-lined streets, Oak Street Beach, the lakefront path stretching north toward Lincoln Park. As a Gold Coast Chicago photographer, I find myself genuinely excited every time I shoot here. The light, the architecture, the lake. It’s a lot to work with.
I’m Adri De La Cruz, a documentary family photographer based in Forest Park. Therefore, I travel throughout Chicago and the suburbs for sessions, and the Gold Coast is one of my favorite places to work.

Documentary Photography in One of Chicago’s Most Beautiful Neighborhoods
My approach doesn’t change based on location. I’m always following rather than directing, always looking for the moment rather than manufacturing it. What does change is the backdrop. In the Gold Coast, that backdrop is extraordinary. Even a simple walk down Astor Street or along the lakefront path produces images that feel cinematic without trying.
Top Locations for a Gold Coast Chicago Photographer Session
Oak Street Beach is the obvious anchor the city skyline behind you, the lake in front, the sand under your feet. It’s stunning at golden hour and surprisingly intimate early in the morning before the crowds arrive. The streets of the historic district particularly Astor Street and Dearborn give you gorgeous architecture and dappled light under mature trees. Washington Square Park is quieter and less photographed, which I love. And the lakefront path between Oak Street and North Avenue offers a beautiful transitional space that works for everything from family sessions to engagement portraits.

Local Outlines: Gold Coast at a Glance
The Gold Coast is one of Chicago’s most historic and affluent neighborhoods, running along Lake Michigan just north of the Magnificent Mile. It’s characterized by 19th and early 20th century architecture, including some of the finest rowhouses and mansions in the city. The neighborhood borders Streeterville to the south, Lincoln Park to the north, and River North to the west putting it at the center of some of the best urban photography locations in the entire Midwest.
