River Room Chicago Wedding — A + L

I first met A + L at Loba in Chicago. From that moment, I knew their River Room Chicago wedding would be unforgettable. We shot their engagement session at Garfield Park Conservatory, and they were adorably awkward in the best way. I couldn’t wait for wedding day.

I pulled up on a sweltering summer day. True to form, my ADHD had me forgetting the AC liquid. Classic. My second shooter met me there, and we got straight to work. Together we explored the grounds and introduced ourselves to the team. The venue feels so Chicago a busy street nearby, the river out front, and the city just living its day in the background.

Morning Details

The vibe at The River Room at Burning Bush Brewery was immaculate. We photographed everything the florals, the dress, and those stunning little Prada kitten heels. The bride and her bridesmaids got ready on-site surrounded by her mom, future mother-in-law, and sisters toasting, laughing, and soaking in the morning. Across the city, my second shooter was with the groom and his groomsmen celebrating A before he married the love of his life.

The ceremony was everything. Emotional, full of laughter including A trying to sneak a kiss early. The flower girl nailed it. The florals were breathtaking, with an organic path full of texture and character.

The reception was pure joy dancing, toasting, good energy all night. L changed into a fun second look, and guests took home Loba’s incredible mole chocolate croissants. If you know me, you know I’m dancing between shots and this crowd made that very easy. The whole night, even as I worked the joy was so contagious. It is easy to see how loved all this couple is. Being the Chicago wedding photographer who shot this special celebration, was such an honor.

Chicago Firehouse Restaurant wedding | Intimate Family Dinner

One of my favorite parts of photographing intimate weddings is what you overhear. At this one I found myself listening to stories of decades-long marriages couples at the table sharing how they made it work, what they learned, what they’d tell their younger selves. There were travel stories too adventures taken together, places still on the list, dreams being made out loud over dinner. These are the conversations that happen when a wedding is small enough to feel like a family dinner, because it actually is one.

We began the day at the iconic The Langham. What a beautiful day it was. On July 20th, Austin and Olivia tied their lives together with all of their loved ones in attendance. Planning a barn wedding near Chicago is such a wonderful way to give guests a rustic escape from the city, and this celebration was the perfect example of that charm.

The Heart of the Day

The day started with bellies full of nerves and happy chatter. Getting ready for your wedding is half the fun—the rooms were filled to the brim with excitement. Austin and Olivia are so laid back and completely made for each other. They privately shared their vows before the ceremony, which was so beautiful to watch from a distance. As a photographer, I always respect those quiet, private moments, even if the light is so good I’m “dying” to photograph it!

Moreover, the natural light and historic details found downtown provide a beautiful glow for portraits. Consequently, the images feel timeless and organic. These two lovely humans tied their souls together on a cold Chicago winter day. Although it was frigid and freezing outside, their connection provided all the warmth and love we needed. We froze a little, but it was still worth it to capture the city and celebrate their union. Of course my favorite part was the bakery Lea, we have one locally here in Oak Park. Their lattes are delicious.

Tips for Your Micro-Wedding

If you are currently planning your own wedding, here is my top advice:

Hire a professional. You want someone who notices the way you look at each other, not just the “staged” shots.

Check local regulations. If you are planning an outdoor ceremony, check the for the latest rules.

I’ve captured many ceremonies, but the sheer explosion of cheers and tears in that space was unlike anything else. It’s these raw, unscripted moments that make a small Chicago wedding so much more impactful than a traditional production.

The Ceremony

Only two family members were in on the ruse, and they stepped forward to lead the ceremony at the front of the room. There was no aisle, no formal altar—just a circle of loved ones and a couple exchanging beautiful, tearful vows. As a photographer, I live for this kind of warmth. Amidst the food and the drinks, the room felt alive.

Choosing an intimate downtown Chicago wedding allowed E+C to focus entirely on their people. In my opinion as a Chicago Wedding photographer The Berkshire Room provided the perfect backdrop for this “secret” vibe—sophisticated, timeless, and deeply personal. It wasn’t just a wedding; it was a core memory for everyone in that room.

We had few posed portraits, everything was documentary photography and it was beautiful. seeing the smiling through the crowd of the bride. The hugs of the groom, and all of the exciting little chatter through the room
