Documenting My Sibling’s Chicago Courthouse Wedding

Kae and Jordan recently began their story together. Specifically, Kae is my youngest sibling. They have watched me struggle through love, and I have watched them as well. We come from the same story, them and I. Even though I am just starting my own journey of self-love, they seem to have so much more experience with it, despite being eight years younger.

Because of their deep connection, photographing their Chicago Courthouse Wedding felt like more than just a job. It felt like a gift. Consequently, I found myself focusing on the tiny, shaky exhales and the way they held onto one another. Furthermore, seeing my own family find their “safe place” in another person is a visual legacy I will cherish forever. A Journey as a Self Portrait Artist in Chicago

Holy wow! I did it—I finished the project. Indeed, as a self portrait artist in Chicago, nothing feels quite like doing exactly what you said you would do. Sticking with a daily creative habit that requires me to carry a tripod everywhere was incredibly challenging. Specifically, I hit a huge wave of indecision around Day 3. However, after I overcame that initial hump, I stopped overthinking and just relaxed into the process of capturing who I am.

Exploring Identity and Motherhood

During this month, I explored the roles I play in this lifetime—the complex intersection of womanhood and motherhood. For example, I thought a lot about the feeling of belonging both to myself and my children simultaneously. Furthermore, this project served as a constant reminder of the impermanence of these tiny, fleeting moments. To stay inspired, I used to have a Facebook community, women have always helped pushed my creativity. which helped me push past my artistic blocks.

All of these images fill me with an immense sense of pride and happiness. Because all of these photos were taken by me, they hold a deeper level of meaning. I am learning that I can be both an amazing mother and a self portrait artist in Chicago who is still finding herself. Family photography and video Chicago it’s something I’ve been wanting to explore for a long time, and this little film of my own kids at Starved Rock is where I finally took that first step.

No crew, no plan, no script. Just me, my kids, and a camera at one of our favorite places in Illinois.

Experimenting with Family Photography and Video in Chicago

I’ll be honest video has always intimidated me. As a photographer I’m comfortable in the stillness of a single frame, but video is a whole different language. This little film is imperfect and short, but making it taught me so much about the power of moving images alongside photography.

Watching it back, I was struck by what video captures that photos simply can’t the sound of little feet on the trail, the way my kids move through a space, the energy of a whole afternoon condensed into a few minutes. It made me want to offer this to my families too.

My work has always been rooted in documentary storytelling. I don’t ask kids to pose or families to perform. I follow, I observe, I wait for the real thing. Video fits that philosophy perfectly — and pairing it with photography feels like a natural next step.

Naperville family lifestyle photographer | A Day of Play

Being a Naperville family lifestyle photographer has taught me that the most beautiful days are often the ones where the ‘plan’ completely falls apart. There is something so honest about a family just being together without the pressure of a perfect itinerary.

I truly loved this day. It was one of those August afternoons where the heat finally starts to soften and everything feels gold. We actually arrived at the park much later than we intended, which meant we missed the window to hang out in the gated kids’ section. But honestly? I think the kids enjoyed it more this way. They had the freedom to just run, explore the open grass, and be themselves.

Storytelling with a Naperville Family Lifestyle Photographer

Since this was back in August, I’m still playing a bit of catch-up with my archives. Sometimes life moves faster than the shutter, and I find myself with so many stories still waiting to be told. The time difference between the moment and the memory can make the details a little fuzzy, but the feeling of the day always stays.

What I remember most about this specific afternoon was the light. It was absolutely beautiful—the kind of light that makes you want to stop and just watch the shapes it creates in the frame. I spent most of the session trying to catch those shadows and the way the sun hit the kids as they moved through the park.

O’Hare Documentary Family Photographer: The Art of the Reunion

It is hard to find the right words for a moment like this. I have seen my mom cry many times after phone calls. Each time, she wished she could see her mother again. It has been over 15 years. Consequently, the moment she told me she would see her mom felt surreal. You eventually accept the reality that you may never see that person again when you choose to immigrate to the USA. This is my family’s story, but it is also a story shared by many.

This topic is rarely black and white. As an O’Hare documentary family photographer, I see these raw emotions often.On this day, we arrived three hours early. We waited anxiously for a familiar face in the crowd. We even brought balloons for the occasion. However, my two-year-old released them onto the airport ceiling just before the meet and greet. We sat there and watched strangers reunite. We saw passengers return home and kids run through the halls.

A Soulful Homecoming

Finally, we saw her rushing through the terminal. She looked exactly as I remembered. Disbelief hit us all for a quick moment. Time showed on her skin, yet her eyes were more beautiful than I remembered. They were just as kind as ever. Deep hugs followed, and the tears flowed freely. Ultimately, my Aunt broke the gravity of the moment. She emerged from the bathroom upset that she missed the first sighting, making us all laugh.

We hope she can visit us much more often now. We also hope to travel to see her soon. I feel so happy to have captured these special images. There is something truly cinematic about the light inside a greenhouse. Consequently, spending the weekend taking Lincoln Park Conservatory photos felt like stepping into another world. Even though my kids are growing up and life feels busier with school, these small adventures remain the heartbeat of our family life. I often forget how lucky I am to be able to give them little gems of their childhood for the future.
