Why I Don’t Ask Your Kids to Say Cheese: My Approach to Chicago Family Photography

I’ll be honest: I am not interested in “perfect” photos. As a specialist in Chicago family photography, I have learned that the best moments happen when the “cheese” stays in the fridge. We have all seen those photos where a toddler’s smile looks more like a grimace because they were told to sit still. In fact, I think those forced moments miss the point of what your family actually feels like.

    The “Real Life” Approach

I know the “big sit-down” photo is usually for the grandparents, and we will get that one. However, my heart is in the messy middle of your session. I want to capture the way your daughter twirls until she falls over or the way your son hides behind your leg. Consequently, I don’t give a lot of stiff directions. I would much rather watch you interact and find the quiet, real connection that makes your family unique.

Turning Play into Chicago Family Photography

To get those real smiles, we have to play. For example, I might ask you to have a tickle fight or see who can jump the highest. Furthermore, these games take the pressure off. When your kids see you laughing and being silly, they stop seeing me as “the lady with the camera.” As a result, they start seeing the session as a fun afternoon at the park. That is exactly when the most authentic Chicago family photography happens.

    Embracing the Chaos of Motherhood

I have been in your shoes, and I know the stress of wondering if your kids will “behave.” Therefore, I want to give you permission to let go. If your toddler has a meltdown or your newborn won’t stop crying, it’s okay. Additionally, those raw, teary snuggles are often the photos you will cherish the most. Because of this, I am always looking for the “in-between” moments when you think I’m not looking.

What to Expect from Your Session

If you want a session that feels like a walk in the park rather than a chore, you are in the right place. First, we pick a spot that fits your vibe. Second, we just let life happen. Ultimately, my goal is for you to look at your photos and recognize the people in them not just a polished version of yourselves. In the world of Chicago family photography, real life is always more beautiful than a pose.

South Shore Cultural Center Family Session: A Masterclass in Fall Styling

There is a specific magic at the South Shore Cultural Center during autumn. The golden prairie grass of the Ronda Parakata stretches toward the water. Consequently, the Chicago skyline seems to float directly over the lake. I call this view the “Lake in the Sky.” Recently, I spent a crisp morning here with a wonderful family of six. This session served as a perfect reminder of why I love my work.

    A Masterclass in Fall Styling

First, we must appreciate the fashion choices. This session was a total masterclass in styling a large family. Instead of matching perfectly, they chose a rich seasonal palette. They used deep olive, burgundy, and warm neutrals.

Furthermore, the textures added incredible depth to every frame. The mom wore a stunning olive trench coat. Similarly, the kids wore cozy knits and soft layers. These intentional choices elevated the documentary feel. As a result, the photos look high-end without feeling stiff or forced.

Black family of six posing in an autumn field with the Chicago skyline in the background at South Shore.

Storytelling at the “Lake in the Sky”

Documenting a family of six requires embracing high energy. Since there are four kids, there is never a dull moment. My goal is always to capture their chaotic rhythm. Therefore, I avoid forcing everyone into “perfect” poses.

We explored the shoreline together. We also played in the tall grass. Most importantly, I let the kids just be themselves. These are the moments that truly matter. For instance, I love the way a toddler holds a parent’s hand. I also look for the shared laughter between siblings. Ultimately, these photos show the quiet pride in a mother’s eyes.

Candid close-up of a mother laughing and hugging her two daughters outdoors in autumn.
Family of six holding hands and walking along the concrete lakefront path at South Shore in Chicago.

Capturing the chaos and the beauty of a family of six! These kids brought so much energy to our fall portrait session, and the Chicago skyline peeking through the trees made it even more special.

A couple sharing a kiss outdoors, with a cloudy sky in the background. The man is wearing a patterned coat, and the woman has curly hair and is dressed in a green jacket.

Why I Love the South Shore Cultural Center

Many families head straight to North Avenue Beach. However, South Shore offers a more soulful perspective of the city. It provides a massive variety of backdrops. Therefore you can find historic architecture and wild prairies in one spot. Because of this variety, it remains my favorite location for a Chicago family session.

Watching these kids grow up in front of my lens is a gift. In conclusion, thank you for letting me capture your story once again.

  • At-Home Family Photography Chicago | The Beauty of Chaos

At-Home Family Photography Chicago | The Beauty of Chaos

Why At-Home Family Photography in Chicago is the Best Choice

There is a profound beauty in the everyday. As a mother and photographer, I believe that at-home family photography in Chicago shouldn’t be about perfect posing; instead, it should be about the “beauty of chaos.” Our homes are the galleries of our lives—they hold the crumbs on the counter, the mismatched socks, and the raw laughter that happens when no one is watching.

Why Choose At-Home Family Photography in Chicago?

Many families feel pressured to head to a park and wear matching outfits. However, the most authentic stories are told within your own four walls. Choosing an at-home session allows everyone to relax. Kids are in their element, and parents don’t have to worry about the Chicago weather or travel logistics. Furthermore, your home provides a backdrop that is 100% unique to your family’s legacy.

Emotional connection and hugs during at-home family photography Chicago

    Embracing the “Messy” Moments

We often try to hide the clutter, but in ten years, you will want to remember exactly how your living room looked when the kids were small. Consequently, my approach to at-home family photography in Chicago focuses on documentary-style storytelling. Whether it’s a chaotic breakfast or a quiet moment of snuggling on the couch, these are the images that will carry the most emotional weight as time goes on.

How to Prepare for Your Lifestyle Session

You might be wondering how to “prep” a house for a photographer. First and foremost, don’t over-clean! I look for the light, not the dust. To make the most of our time, I recommend choosing 2-3 rooms with the best natural light. Additionally, wearing comfortable, neutral clothing helps keep the focus on your connections rather than your outfits. Most importantly, just be yourselves. The “chaos” is exactly what makes your family beautiful.

Fall Family Photography Chicago | Autumn Sessions in Itasca

There is nothing quite like the magic of fall family photography in Chicago. For example, when the leaves turn to vibrant oranges, the landscape transforms into a perfect studio. Furthermore, the crisp air adds a sense of energy to every session. I recently headed to Itasca, IL for a golden hour session. This particular gallery featured a family that holds a very special place in my heart.

A legacy of love fall family photography : From Birth to Childhood

I have a unique bond with this family because our history goes back several years. In fact, I was actually their birth photographer. I had the incredible honor of documenting the births of their last two children.

Watching these babies take their first breaths was truly amazing. Now, I get to watch them run through the autumn leaves. While they are affectionately known as the “Anderson kids,” I still see the tiny newborns I first met. As a Chicago family photographer, there is no greater compliment than this. Being invited back to document a family as they grow is a true gift. Additionally, this session was special because it celebrated a birthday milestone for one of those babies.

The Birth to Lifestyle Journey in Chicago

Many people know me for my birth work. However, I truly love transitioning into fall family photography in Chicago with my birth clients.

Visual Consistency: I capture your family from birth through the school-age years. Therefore, this ensures a consistent style for your home’s gallery walls.

Trust and Comfort: Because I was there for their most intimate moments, the children are very relaxed around me. Consequently, this leads to authentic and candid portraits.

Documenting Growth: We aren’t just taking one photo. Instead, we are continuing a visual story that started on day one.

Why Choose Itasca for Your Fall Family Photography?

Many families look for fall family photography in Chicago city limits. On the other hand, the surrounding suburbs like Itasca offer a different kind of beauty. The sprawling parks allow for a “lifestyle” approach. Because these preserves are quiet, kids can truly be kids.

Benefits of a Suburban Autumn Session:

    • Golden Hour Light: The sun dips behind the trees in the Western Suburbs. As a result, this creates a soft, warm glow. It is ideal for family portraits.
    • Space to Move: City parks can often be crowded. In contrast, Itasca locations give kids the freedom to run. This results in more natural and happy smiles.
    • Nature’s Variety: You will find amber grasses and deep green pines. For this reason, these textures help your family portraits stand out.

Expert Tips for a Stress-Free Family Session

Planning fall family photos in Chicago can feel overwhelming. Here are some tips to make it easy:

    1. Timing is Everything

The “Golden Hour” happens just before sunset. This is the best time for lighting. For young children, make sure they have had a nap. A well-rested child is a happy model!

    2. Focus on Connection

Don’t worry about everyone looking at the camera. I want to capture how you interact. Hug your kids. Whisper a joke to your partner. These candid moments are the ones you will cherish.

    3. Bring the Essentials

Pack a small “emergency kit.” Include wipes, a hairbrush, and non-messy snacks. If the weather is chilly, bring a cute blanket. We can use it as a prop in your fall family photos in Chicago.

    4. Trust Your Photographer

I have been doing this for a long time. I know how to handle shy toddlers or energetic siblings. My goal is to make this fun. If you are relaxed, the kids will be too.

    Preserving Your Family’s Legacy

These fall family photos in Chicago are more than just a holiday card. Essentially, they document your family’s history. They show how your daughter’s hair curls. Likewise, they capture how your son still holds your hand.

The youngest Anderson girl is growing up fast. Actually, I still remember her birth vividly. Through these images, we have frozen time. We laughed together and chased the last bit of sunlight. In the end, these moments matter most.

Book Your Fall Family Photography in Chicago

My fall calendar fills up very quickly. Because the “peak” colors only last a few weeks, early booking is best. Whether you need a birth photographer or fall family photos in Chicago, I am here for you. So, let’s tell your family’s story together.

In conclusion, these sessions are about more than just a beautiful gallery. They are about documenting the genuine spirit of your family as it changes year after year. As a specialist in fall family photography in Chicago, I aim to provide an experience that is as relaxed as it is professional. I truly look forward to chasing the golden light with your family in Itasca or anywhere across the city. Let’s make sure these fleeting autumn moments are preserved forever.

Promontory Point Family Photography in the Winter

I am so excited to finally be sharing my sessions! Promontory Point family photography is truly something special, even when the Chicago lakefront wind starts to bite. This location was chosen by my client, who happens to be an incredibly talented photographer herself. There is no higher compliment than being asked to capture a fellow artist’s family!

Braving the Cold for Authentic Connection

If you find yourself on the south side of Chicago, go take a walk here—or better yet, book me to photograph the love in your life. This session was so much fun, even with the dreadful December cold. Man, was it chilly! But looking at these previews, I truly feel that these images feel warm.

This family was a joy to work with. Photographer kids so special, these kiddos were so ready to explore and get some cool images for their mama! While working with older kids sometimes makes me nervous, I have to remind myself that I’ve been doing this for a while. Whether it’s a newborn session or Promontory Point family photography, it’s never about the perfect pose; it’s always about the connection. Its all about the connection

    Planning Your Chicago Winter Session

When planning for Promontory Point family photography, the architecture of the stone steps and the skyline views provide a timeless backdrop. In the winter, the “Point” is much less crowded than in the summer months, giving us the freedom to move around and capture candid moments.

To stay warm during a winter shoot, I always recommend layers, stylish coats, and plenty of movement. This family did a great job staying cozy, and the result is a gallery full of heart and soul.I hope I get a summer session here soon!

After a Beautiful Birth, a Beautiful Baby

Let me be frank: I completely fall in love with the families I work with, even if we only work together once. I always go back to so many of the galleries on my page because I’ve been so fortunate to work with incredible humans. However, when providing Chicago lifestyle newborn photography, my birth clients hold a very special part of my creative heart. Witnessing the transition from pregnancy to parenthood is a high honor.

Seeing my clients in that post-birth newborn baby bliss is always full of questions for me! I want to know everything. “How is baby, how is mom, what did you think about the birth, how do you feel?” I try not to be too overwhelming, but the transformation is just so incredible to witness. The cute little babies have changed in every possible way, but the woman who gave birth is someone else entirely. The couple is changed as well; dad is more protective, and something beautiful activates in both of them.

Why I Love Chicago Lifestyle Newborn Photography

From the maternity session to the birth we worked together, J & P completely embody love. In all of our sessions together, they were swooning over each other. I know that little baby girl is so completely lucky to have been born into this “love bubble.”

Our Chicago lifestyle newborn photography session together was beyond cute. The little baby girl was certainly bigger and so awake—they were completely in awe of her. Seeing J give birth, I was in awe of her. I was also so glad she invited her parents to be a part of the session; I am incredibly passionate about grandparents being photographed. It adds such a rich layer to the family story and shows the deep roots of love surrounding the new arrival.

    Capturing the Connection at Home

Choosing Chicago lifestyle newborn photography means we focus on the real moments. We don’t need fancy props or stiff poses. Instead, we focus on the way you look at your daughter, the way your parents hold their grandchild, and the quiet moments of connection in your own home. These are the images that will matter in twenty years.

A Warm Autumn Day with an Evanston Family Photographer

Sometimes it feels like the fall is here and gone before you know it. Doing a Evanston Beach Family session in the fall I always keep a close eye on the foliage and the weather, hoping for those rare, warm autumn days. On one of those perfect afternoons, I got to play along with this wonderful family at the lakefront.

As a Chicago Family photographer who loves traveling north to The Evanston lighthouse beach is the perfect space for a little kid adventure. There is something about the combination of the historic lighthouse, the sand dunes, and the vastness of Lake Michigan that brings out the best in everyone. Just be warned: running in the sand is extremely tiring! Ha! Nonetheless, it’s so much fun and worth every grain of sand in your shoes.

Connection in an Evanston Beach Family session

These two sisters were a joy to work with. For some of my little clients, getting used to a big camera can take some time. However, as an experienced Evanston Family Photographer, I know that with enough encouragement and time, we can get past the “camera shyness” and get to playing.

We spent our time running along the shoreline and exploring the dunes. I loved seeing the bond between these two sisters—they were full of giggles and hugs. This is a great reminder for parents that it’s okay if your child takes a bit longer to warm up. I never expect “perfect” behavior; I only want to capture the real stuff.

Why Choose the Evanston Lighthouse for Your Photos?

When searching for an Evanston Family Photographer, location is everything. The Lighthouse beach offers a variety of textures—from the architectural interest of the lighthouse itself to the natural beauty of the water. In the fall, the light has a golden quality that reflects beautifully off the lake.

Whether we are doing tickles for mom or racing through the sand, my goal is to make sure you leave the session feeling like you just had a great family outing. These memories are the ones that will hang on your walls for years to come.See the full Evanston family photographer portfolio and experience guide

    Evanston Beach Session FAQ

What is the best time for beach photos in Evanston? As an Evanston Family Photographer, I always recommend “Golden Hour,” which is the hour right before sunset. At the lighthouse beach, the sun sets behind the trees, creating a soft, glowing light over the water that is incredibly flattering for portraits.

What should we wear for a fall beach session? Fall at Lake Michigan can be unpredictable! I suggest layers. Knitted sweaters, denim, and earth tones like rust, mustard, and deep blues look stunning against the blue water and tan sand. Don’t be afraid of blankets—they make for great “snuggle” props!

Is the Evanston Lighthouse beach crowded? In the fall, it is much quieter than the summer months. This allows us more room to run around and capture those wide-angle shots of the shoreline without strangers in the background.

Montrose Bird Point Sanctuary Family Session | Chicago

Planning a family session at the Montrose Bird Point Sanctuary is one of my favorite ways to spend a morning in Chicago. Sometimes kiddos aren’t as warm to me as quickly as their parents would want, and that’s okay. Specifically, this little kiddo was a bit apprehensive at the start of our shoot. Because the camera can be intimidating, I always focus on making the session feel like a walk in the park. Consequently, I often hear parents ask, ‘what do I do with my hands?’ To that question, the answer is always to hold someone you love

In fact, I love to photograph connection and movement. For this reason, the Montrose Bird Point Sanctuary is one of my favorite locations in Chicago. This beach offers so much space for kids to run and feel free. Therefore, it helps them feel much more at ease than a traditional studio setting.

The Montrose Bird Point Sanctuary is truly a beautiful location! Additionally, if you want a mix of wild texture and the city skyline, it is perfect. Because it allows kids to explore the paths, it makes for a very relaxed family session. This family was so kind and sweet throughout the entire morning.

Even with the initial shyness, this kiddo gave us many cute moments to document. Furthermore, the morning sun provided a stunning, warm glow across the dunes. Overall, it was a successful day in a gorgeous place. If you are looking for a location with the Chicago skyline and a touch of nature, this is the spot. In conclusion, every session in the city has its own unique rhythm. Whether a child is shy or energetic, I aim to document the truth of your family. As a result, these photos become timeless keepsakes for years to come.

What style of photography is best for your family? | Adri De La Cruz

What style of photography is best for your family?

When planning a session, many parents wonder, “what style of photography is best for your family?” In our modern world, photography is accessible to almost everyone. If you own a smartphone, you have instant access to memories. You can print and gift these images to loved ones easily. Furthermore, you can develop a creative voice with your own eye. While not everyone wants to build a photography business, I certainly did. My journey has been long, but it remains filled with lessons.

Finding a Photography Style for Your Chicago Family

During my early years in business, I worked hard to ensure my voice was felt through my images. At the start, I often tried to use other people’s styles. However, those methods never truly felt like me. I have always learned best by doing. Consequently, I developed systems that actually worked for my vision. I now reside comfortably between as a Chicago Family Photographer shooting both documentary and lifestyle photography.

Determining What Style of Photography is Best for Your Family

You might wonder why I choose this specific hybrid style. Specifically, I believe it is the best way to make my clients feel secure. The investment in professional photography is substantial. Therefore, I want to combine our expectations during every session. I want you to have amazing smiles for your walls. Additionally, I want to fulfill my own creative heart. This approach helps you decide what style of photography is best for your family and your home.

    Capturing the “In-Between” Moments

Very often, the favorite images come from the quiet moments between poses. For instance, I love capturing a mother wiping a toddler’s face. I also document the deep stare of a preteen who is annoyed with family photos. These tangible moments are my favorite things to capture for you. Because I am a mother, I constantly exist in my own memories. My kids are growing up fast. As a result, I realize some moments can only be relived through prints.

    The Beauty of Simplicity

I believe that kids enjoy these relaxed sessions the most. Similarly, parents feel less stressed and can finally relax. Once we see the beauty of simplicity, we can focus on just being together. We stop expecting everyone to “perform” for a camera. In conclusion, I want my work to highlight the instances often overlooked for “prettier” ones.

We moved from location to location to find the best backdrops. Finally, we finished Fulton Market family photography in a beautiful alley. All of Fulton Market really is a lot of fun for a photoshoot.

The Vibrant Energy of Fulton Market Family Photography

To make your photography session a success, you need to consider a few things. First, choose a neighborhood like Fulton Market or Pilsen. These areas are famous for murals. Second, think about your outfits. You want colors that pop but don’t get lost in the busy background.

Additionally, timing is vital. We shot this during the morning to avoid the crowds. Because the lighting was soft, the colors of the murals looked incredible. Furthermore, working with a photographer who knows the “secret” alleys is a huge advantage.

In short, if you want a backdrop that is as colorful as your family, Chicago street art photography is the answer. It creates a gallery that stands out. Therefore, don’t be afraid to choose a bold, urban setting. Specifically, it works for families who want to have fun and be themselves! That is what being a Chicago Family Photographer is all about.
