    In these sessions, I am there for the first cup of coffee and the final goodnight kiss. It is a lot of work, but it is incredibly rewarding. Between the laughter, conversations, and even the tears, I am snapping moments that will last well beyond our time here on earth. A day-in-the-life session is a time capsule of your current life.

    Why Documentary Style is Different

    Most photography sessions are about the “best” version of yourself. But I believe your “real” version is actually the most beautiful. You don’t need to coordinate outfits or tell your kids to sit still. In fact, I prefer it when they don’t! The way a big brother-to-be pats the kitty cat or works on his bike tells a much deeper story than a posed portrait in a park ever could.

    Frequently Asked Questions for a Chicago Documentary Maternity Photographer

    Is a full day too long for my kids? Actually, it’s often easier! Kids get “camera fatigue” in 60-minute sessions because they feel the pressure to perform. In a full-day session with a Chicago documentary maternity photographer, I become part of the furniture. After the first hour, they forget I’m there and just go back to being themselves.

    Do we need a clean house? Absolutely not. Your home is the backdrop of your life. The laundry on the couch and the dishes in the sink are part of this season of your life. As a Chicago documentary maternity photographer, I see the beauty in the “mess” because that mess is evidence of a life being lived.

    What should we wear for a documentary session? Wear what you would normally wear on a Saturday. If that’s leggings and a t-shirt, great. If the kids want to wear their superhero capes all day, even better. The goal is to look back at these photos and recognize yourselves.

    How to Prepare for a Full-Day Documentary Experience

    Because these sessions are so long, preparation is different than a standard hour-long shoot. Here is how we make the magic happen:

    • Ignore the Camera: The first hour is the “ice breaker.” I’ll chat with you and the kids, but eventually, I want you to stop looking at me. Go about your day. Fold the laundry, play the board game, or take a nap.
    • Environment Matters, Not Perfection: Don’t feel the need to deep-clean. The stacks of books on your nightstand or the toys on the rug are the landmarks of your life right now.
    • Meal Times are Gold: Some of the best photos happen over messy pancakes or a family dinner. These are the “anchor points” of a family day.

    As the oldest of four siblings, I am forever connecting moments in my head to what was. I don’t have to be told how special this work is! For many families, the “perfectly posed” portrait doesn’t tell the whole story.     I recently had the pleasure of documenting Hannah and Eric’s Lincoln Park maternity photos in the heart of Chicago. Sweet December is here, and the time to meet this sweet little baby is nearing. Time has absolutely flown by.

    I’ve been pregnant a number of times and have given birth just twice. However, both times were very different experiences. I brought those babies home and I was a different person. After my son, I was a mother for the first time. He was big, beautiful, and full of wonder.

    In contrast, my daughter surprised me with difficultness. I thought I was a pro by then. However, she swiftly humbled me with her big, big cries. I’ve said it before that being a photographer means you’re often meeting people at the highlights in their life.

    The Best Backdrop for Lincoln Park Maternity Photos

    Hannah and Eric are about to be first-time parents. Therefore, it is my honor to capture and witness this milestone. Being a part of someone’s birth team is the biggest deal of my life and I cherish it so.

    Specifically, I’m so happy we were able to find a moment in the current world chaos to capture their happiness emerging. You can feel the love, and you can see the devotion. Little do they know that the way they will parent is already apparent. You can see it in the way they see each other and in the way they hold each other.

    As a Chicago Maternity Photographer I fully believe that the location is secondary to your clients. maybe even 3rd in importance. My clients are first and their emotions second.. location is the last thing that matters to me. In this session we used locations I feel often feel overlooked, in the winter especially. I love to cling to ever greens, and the outside of the Lincoln Park greenhouse has beautiful evergreens. We also walked over to the Peggy Notebaert museum to use the outside. The dried up tall winter grass gave us some texture. Furthermore, I recommend checking the Lincoln Park Conservatory
     website for seasonal bloom schedules. This ensures we have the most colorful environment for your session. Whether we are capturing the architecture or the quiet garden paths, the goal is to document this fleeting season of life in an authentic way.

Whether we are capturing the skyline or the quiet garden paths, the goal is to document this fleeting season of life.

    Furthermore, the timing of your session is key. Most families choose to shoot between 28 and 34 weeks. This allows us to capture that beautiful “glow” while ensuring you still feel comfortable moving around the park.
