Best Chicago Family Photo Locations (From a Photographer Who’s Actually Been There)

Choosing a location for your family session doesn’t have to be stressful. As a Chicago documentary photographer, I’ve shot at parks, beaches, historic neighborhoods, and living rooms across the city and suburbs. These are my honest favorites. Real Chicago family photo locations I keep coming back to because the light, the atmosphere, and the energy are just right.

Why Location Matters (But Not as Much as You Think)

The right spot sets the mood for your session. That said, the best location is one that feels like you. Not one that just looks good on a mood board. So here’s a breakdown of my favorites, what makes each one special, and who each spot works best for.

A family walking along a lakeshore with a city skyline in the background, captured in black and white. Chicago family photo locations

Montrose Beach & Bird Point-One of My Favorite Chicago Family Photo Locations

This is one of my most-visited spots and it earns that title every single time. On one side you have the Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary with tall prairie grass and winding trails. On the other, a wide open beach with that iconic Chicago skyline sitting right behind your family. It’s one of the few Chicago family photo locations where you can get nature and city in the same frame without driving all over town. Morning sessions work best here. The light is soft and the wind hasn’t picked up yet. You can find parking info and hours on the Chicago Park District website.

A woman swings a young girl joyfully by the arms in a park setting with a modern wooden structure in the background.

    Lincoln Park — The Honeycombs

The honeycomb pavilion near the South Pond is a staple for good reason. You get dappled light through the trees, wildflowers, a peek at the Hancock Building, and enough variety to fill a full gallery without moving more than a few hundred feet. Early morning is the sweet spot. The light is gorgeous and the park is still quiet. Families with little ones especially love how open and relaxed it feels. The South Pond sits just outside the Lincoln Park Zoo, which makes it easy to turn your session into a whole morning out.

A couple sitting together on a blanket by a serene water body, sharing an intimate moment as they lean in for a gentle kiss. The scene is surrounded by lush greenery and soft light filtering through the trees. Chicago family photo locations

    Humboldt Park Boathouse

This one is underrated and I will say it forever. The Prairie-style boathouse, lily ponds, and winding lagoon give sessions a timeless, almost romantic feel that you just don’t find at more popular spots. It’s large enough that we can always find a private corner, even on a busy day. If your family loves a moody, editorial look, this is your place.

A family walks hand in hand along a sunlit sidewalk, surrounded by greenery and decorative lights. The scene features a woman in a white dress, a man, a young girl in a black dress, and a toddler in an orange outfit.

Oak Park Streets & Pleasant Home

Tree-lined streets, Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, and some of the best afternoon light I’ve ever worked in. Pleasant Home is a personal favorite. The historic Prairie School exterior is stunning and the surrounding neighborhood feels warm and lived-in. Oak Park sessions never feel like a “shoot.” They feel like a stroll through a really beautiful place with your people. Learn more about Pleasant Home Museum — it’s worth a visit even outside of a photo session.

The boy, wearing a striped sweater, covers his face with his sweater, appearing shy or embarrassed. They are both on a concrete surface in front of a green wall. Chicago family photo locations

    River Forest

This is my home base and I know every good pocket of light here. Some of my favorite frames have come from the most unexpected spots. A green wall, a chalk wall under a shaded pathway, a quiet park at golden hour. River Forest doesn’t need to be fancy to be beautiful. That’s exactly why I love it.

A woman and a little girl leaning over a railing, looking at the waterway, surrounded by tall buildings reflecting sunlight.

    The Chicago Riverwalk

For families who want that unmistakably Chicago feel without the crowds of the lakefront. The Riverwalk gives you incredible architecture, water reflections, and great light throughout the day. It’s especially beautiful in the warmer months when the city is alive and buzzing around you.

    Your Own Home

Honestly? Some of my favorite sessions never leave the house. Your home already tells your story. The nursery, the kitchen table, the backyard. There’s nothing to set up and nothing to coordinate. It just needs to be real, and real is always enough.

Indiana Dunes Family Photographer: Capturing Sunset Magic

As an Indiana Dunes family photographer, I believe there is nothing more beautiful than Lake Michigan at golden hour. The soft light hits the sand perfectly, creating a warm glow for your portraits. Specifically, the Dunes offer a landscape that is completely unique to the Midwest. Because the scenery is so neutral and textured, your family’s natural connection can truly take center stage.

Mom and son on blanket Indiana Dunes family photographer session.

Why Hire an Indiana Dunes Family Photographer?

First, many clients travel from the city looking for a Chicago family photographer who can offer a change of scenery. In addition to the towering dunes, the park provides a sense of peace that you simply cannot find in an urban setting. Consequently, children tend to feel more relaxed, which leads to those genuine, candid smiles you see in these images.

What to Wear for Your Beach Session

To begin with, your outfit choice plays a huge role in the final look of your gallery. For example, notice how the neutral knits and denim in this session complement the sand without clashing. To achieve this look, keep these tips in mind:

    • Choose Texture: Knits and linen add visual depth to your photos.
    • USE COLORS : This year I am embracing color. I want the more the merrier when it comes to bold colors. without using neon colors that cast a color on skin.
    • Think About Movement: Since we will be walking through the sand, choose clothing that allows you to move freely.

Check this link  Official Indiana Dunes National Park website
for additional park info, if you want to extend your stay. There is a fee to the par and they only take cash.

    Planning Your Session

If you are ready to document your family’s story in this stunning location, I’d love to help. Beyond just taking photos, I assist with location scouting and permit navigation to ensure your day is stress-free.

Milwaukee Family Photography: A Downtown Waterfront Session

Might as well call me a Milwaukee Family photographer. Milwaukee is such an incredible city. As a Chicago family photographer, people often ask if I am willing to travel for a session. Specifically, my answer is always a resounding yes! I recently had the pleasure of heading north for a Milwaukee Family Photography session at the beautiful downtown waterfront. This is the 3rd year working with this beautiful family. Fortunately, the weather was absolutely perfect, and the golden hour light over the lake was a dream come true for this lifestyle shoot.

    Candid embrace between everyone Milwaukee

    Exploring the Milwaukee Waterfront

We began our session near the rocks, where the kids could climb and explore. Instead of stiff posing, I encouraged the family to interact naturally with the landscape. For example, the children loved jumping between the stones while their parents watched with pure joy. This area is such a gem for Milwaukee Family Photography because it offers both urban skylines and natural, rugged textures.

Additionally, we moved to the grassy areas to let the kids run free. The city of Milwaukee provides such a diverse backdrop, from the modern architecture of the Art Museum to the calming blue of Lake Michigan. Consequently, we were able to capture a wide variety of moods and moments in a single hour.

Why I Love Traveling for Sessions

Furthermore, traveling to new locations keeps my creative spark alive. While I love my Chicago neighborhoods, there is something refreshing about the Milwaukee energy. Therefore, if you are looking for Milwaukee Family Photography but want that specific Chicago lifestyle aesthetic, I would be honored to make the trip for you.

In addition, at-home or destination sessions allow families to feel more like they are on an adventure. Ultimately, my goal is to document your family’s unique connection. Whether we are in the heart of Chicago or on the shores of Milwaukee, the focus remains on the love you share.

Family Photographer Bensenville IL: A Sunny Christmas at Fischer Farm

Are you looking for a Family Photographer Bensenville IL? I recently captured a beautiful, sunny Christmas session at the historic Fischer Farm. Although the morning was brisk, the golden light was truly perfect. As a Chicago family photographer, I love this location. However, for me, Fischer Farm is much more than just a pretty backdrop for my clients.

My Deep Roots as a Family Photographer Bensenville IL

First, I have lived in this area for a very long time. I actually graduated from the local high school! Consequently, Bensenville holds a very special place in my heart. My own kids grew up coming to this farm. We spent many afternoons exploring the grounds when they were little. Furthermore, my professional journey started right here. Believe it or not, I had my very first paid photography job at Fischer Farm. Therefore, returning here to photograph new families feels like coming home every single time.

    Navigating Logistics at Fischer Farm

Fischer Farm is a local gem for portraits. However, you should know that dogs are not allowed on the actual farm grounds. Because this sweet family wanted to include their new puppy, we had to get creative. Consequently, we started our session and just outside the farm perimeter. I found a lovely nearby spot for puppy snuggles before we moved to the historic barns. In the end, we captured the best of both worlds!

A Rustic Christmas for Every Bensenville Family

The 19th-century barns provided a gorgeous backdrop for these Christmas photos. The sun was bright, but the temperature remained quite low. As an experienced Chicago baby photographer, I know that little ones have a short time limit in the cold. Because the baby got a bit chilly toward the end, we moved very quickly. I worked fast to capture her sweet personality before she reached her limit.

As a Family Photographer Bensenville IL, I aim to keep your session stress-free and efficient. My goal is always to deliver a beautiful gallery before a meltdown begins. I truly loved meeting this new family. Because of our shared love for this historic Bensenville landmark, we created something timeless together.

A Heartfelt Milwaukee Family Photography Session

This Milwaukee family photography session was a wonderful experience to document. Initially, when the Patel family reached out for a session near me but mentioned they lived in Milwaukee, I immediately jumped at the chance to travel. Consequently, I headed north to capture their story in a city I truly love. Milwaukee is such a vibrant town, and my own children adore the local parks there. Specifically, I knew one particular park would provide the perfect backdrop for a session with a busy toddler.

boy smelling a flower Milwaukee family photography session in a sunny park

Why Milwaukee is Perfect for Family Portraits

Furthermore, I believe that the right location makes all the difference for a Milwaukee family photography session. This beautiful boy had the most impressive eyelashes and gorgeous brown eyes. Because I had previously photographed his first birthday, I was delighted to work with this family again. Fortunately, we were blessed with beautiful weather and a very happy kiddo, which ultimately resulted in stunning, sun-drenched images.

    Tips for Your Next Session

If you are planning your own photography experience, please remember that comfort is key. For example, choosing a park where your children can run and play will always lead to more authentic smiles. Instead of forcing poses, we focus on the genuine joy of your family. Ultimately, my goal is to document your connection in a way that feels natural and timeless. Therefore, a Milwaukee family photography session is less about the “perfect” shot and more about the perfect memory. In conclusion, I am always eager to return to Wisconsin to tell more of these beautiful stories. Finally, this ensures your family memories remain the priority

Beautiful Oak Park Family Photography with the Patel Family

This Oak Park family photography session was a wonderful experience to document. Initially, I met this family last year for their maternity session and newborn session and I was thrilled to return for Arden’s first birthday. Because Oak Park is such a vibrant town, we chose to highlight the local architecture and tree-lined streets. Specifically, I believe that the character of this neighborhood adds a timeless feel to every portrait. This specific part of Oak Park is the best for photography sessions. I love the texture on the streets and the hotels still resembling another time.

    Why Milestones Matter

Furthermore, it is incredibly rewarding to see babies a year after their newborn session. Specifically, being invited back to document such lovely milestones is an honor. The curls on this sweet girl were perfect, and she was so full of smiles and cuddles throughout the shoot. Consequently, her joy reminds me to stay present and remember how swiftly time passes. I photographed this sweet girls newborn session. She got so extremely cute. Her temperament was feisty and sweet at the same time.

    Planning Your Oak Park Session

If you are looking for Oak Park family photography, you likely already know how much charm this area has. For example, the historic homes provide a stunning backdrop for lifestyle portraits. Instead of a stiff studio, we use the real world to tell your family’s story. Ultimately, my goal is to document your genuine connection. Because these years go by so fast, capturing these memories is essential. In conclusion, I look forward to many more sessions in this beautiful community. This spring time was full of greens and flowers, even though it was a little big cold. I loved my clients wardrobe. it was perfect. Seeing families grow throughout the years is so important as a Chicago Family Photographer.

At Home with the Chelebek Family

Choosing an at home family photographer in Evanston means letting go of perfection. Often, we feel pressure to present a curated version of our lives. However, there is so much beauty in the unscripted moments. This early morning session reminded me that the best memories aren’t planned. Instead, they simply happen in the quiet corners of our own homes.

Life is beautiful chaos. Consequently, I choose to embrace it in my work. These sessions are for families who want to remember the “right now.” For instance, we didn’t worry about tidy rooms during this shoot. We spent the morning in a treehouse. We sang until everyone was breathless with laughter. As a result, the photos feel honest.

Why Hire an At Home Family Photographer in Evanston?

There is a specific kind of magic in the mundane. When I look at these images of the Chelebek family, I don’t just see a photo session; I see the way a house becomes a home. It’s in the messy piles of books and the way the light filters through the windows in the early morning. As an at home family photographer in Evanston, my goal is to make sure you don’t forget these small, quiet details that make up your ‘right now.’

We often think we need to go somewhere grand for photos, but your sanctuary is usually the best backdrop. It’s where your kids feel safe to be wild, and where you feel safe to be yourself. These are the moments that will matter most in ten years—the way they climbed on the furniture or the specific way you held them on the rug.

A playful scene in a cozy bedroom with a young girl jumping on a bed, a dog nearby, and a man holding a child upside down while a woman looks on, all smiling.

Furthermore, I’ve realized that kids are most themselves in their own element. In addition to their own toys, they have the freedom to just be. Specifically, I loved capturing the raw connection between these two sisters. Ultimately, the goal isn’t a perfect pose. It is about documenting the messy reality of your family’s love. Therefore, I am grateful to capture these stories. Don’t forget to check out my Chicago Family Photographer portfolio.

There is a quiet peace during a family session by the lake. First, as an Evanston beach family photographer, I love the light at Lake Michigan. The Kurani family session was a great example of this. In fact, we had a warm, golden day in October. It felt just like summer.

Your Evanston Beach Family Photographer Session

Next, we walked along the shore and the grass. Because the Evanston beaches have so much variety, we got many different looks. We took photos of the kids running. We also caught quiet moments by the water. The clouds were soft. So, the light was perfect for the family. It made their laughter stand out against the blue water. Additionally, many families ask why I recommend the beach for their portraits. However, once they see the open sky and feel the sand between their toes, they understand. During this Evanston session, the kids had the freedom to run and be themselves. For example, we didn’t focus on stiff posing. Instead, we captured the doting way the parents looked at their children and the joy of being together outside.

Finally, these sessions are about more than just a pretty location. They are about documenting the love and care your family has for one another. Moreover, as an Evanston beach family photographer, I strive to make these moments feel effortless. It was truly a joy to be their photographer in the heart of Evanston, IL. Whether you are new to the area or a long-time local, the lake is always a worthy backdrop for your memories.

Can’t wait for summer and more family sessions by the beach this is one of my favorite locations. Parking is always available and accessible. I will always suggest this location to my clients who want water and sand. Summer as a Chicago Family Photographer is peak joy.

Adventures of a Traveling Chicago Photographer

It is so typically me to wear white sneakers in gravel and dirt. Consequently, I ruined them almost immediately! Even though I knew the terrain was rough, I made those choices anyway. Sigh. As a traveling Chicago photographer, I am finally catching up on my blogging. It has been a while since I added personal work to my little corner of the internet. I have been enjoying my summer in the sun, but fall is now here. Because it is my busiest season, I am working hard to stay afloat while finishing my 2022 outdoor sessions.

    Traveling with the Family

I recently completed another cross-country drive. However, this time was different because I had more drivers and more help. As a result, I had more ability to take in the beauty of the road. I spent a lot of time in the backseat working and hanging out with my oldest son.

We watched Malcolm in the Middle together. Although he was reluctant at first, he eventually loved it. We have very similar humor, so I knew he would laugh! Unfortunately, we hit a deer just outside of Nebraska. It definitely scared my youngest, but thankfully we were all okay.

    Finding Inspiration in the Desert

During the long drive, I had so much time to think. One of my favorite things to do is listen to music and think of the people I LOVE. All in all, it was a beautiful trip that created many memories for my kids.

Furthermore, I believe public art is incredibly special. We visited Seven Magic Mountains, which is truly beautiful. However, the rocks have been changed over time by visitors. Do you think this contributes to the art, or does it take away from it?

As a family photographer in Wheaton, IL, I love capturing the magic of new beginnings. Every time I photograph a family with a toddler and a new baby, it takes me back to my own journey. I remember clearly what it was like navigating life with two little ones. At the time, I was right in the middle of potty training my oldest. We tried our hardest and did okay!

Because of those personal experiences, I truly relate to the “beautiful chaos” of a growing family. I often receive apologies from parents for “unruly” or messy kids. However, as a family photographer in Wheaton, IL, those are actually the moments I love to capture the most.

Family photographer Wheaton IL captures the Bhatt family sitting together on a grey couch in their living room.

While posed smiles are nice, the candid moments leave a lasting mark. All of these stages fly by in an instant. Therefore, I believe every family benefits from having professional photos of their love together.

We had a lovely time inside and loved that we were able to head outdoors for a few more.

    The Session Experience

The Bhatt family invited me to document their brand-new chapter as a family of four. Specifically, it was a joy to watch the older brother learn his new role. We spent a lovely time inside for a documentary-style session. Afterward, we were able to head outdoors for a few more portraits.

Tips from a Family Photographer in Wheaton, IL

If you are planning your own session in the Chicago suburbs, keep these tips in mind:

    • Embrace the Chaos: Do not worry about “perfect” behavior. Instead, let the kids be themselves.
    • Lighting Matters: I look for soft light to make your skin tones glow. This is true whether we are in-home or at a park.
    • Wardrobe: Neutral colors work beautifully. Additionally, they allow your emotions to be the focal point.

Choosing a chicago family photographer that travels to Wheaton, IL, allows you to preserve these fleeting memories. In conclusion, I am honored the Bhatt family chose me to document this special time.
