Honest, Unposed Stories: Your Chicago Outdoor Family Photographer
Finding a Chicago outdoor family photographer who truly understands the beautiful chaos of your family is everything. Chicago offers a backdrop like no other from the golden tall grasses along the lakefront to the architectural grit of the West Loop, to the tree-lined parks of the western suburbs. My goal is to meet your family in these spaces and document the quiet glances, the loud laughs, and the in-between moments that make your story completely yours.
I believe children are at their best when they have room to breathe. Unlike a traditional studio, the city’s parks and hidden corners give kids room to explore, run, and simply be themselves. That freedom results in photographs that feel like a memory not a production. To explore everything Chicago has to offer families, Choose Chicago is a wonderful resource for events, neighborhoods, and seasonal happenings across the city.
My Favorite Chicago Session Locations
Chicago and the surrounding suburbs offer an incredible variety of backdrops for outdoor family sessions. Some of my favorite spots include:
–Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool — serene, lush, and tucked away from the city noise. Check the Chicago Park District for seasonal hours and permit requirements before your session.
–The 606 Trail — modern, elevated, and full of urban texture
–Northerly Island — wide open lakefront views with stunning skyline backdrops
–Humboldt Park — beautiful lagoon reflections and golden prairie grasses
–Maple Lake at Waterfall Glen — a hidden gem in the western suburbs near Downers Grove. Check DuPage County Forest Preserves for trail conditions and parking info before your session.
–Spring Brook Nature Center, Itasca —wooded trails perfect for golden hour. Browse additional Forest Preserve locations through the Forest Preserve District of Cook County to find the perfect spot near you.
I also regularly shoot sessions throughout the western suburbs including Downers Grove, Naperville, Elmhurst, Wheaton, Hinsdale, Oak Park, Glen Ellyn, and La Grange. If you have a special location in mind a neighborhood park, your own backyard, or a spot that means something to your family I’m absolutely open to it. The best location is one that feels like you.

Before Your Session

Whether your kids are toddlers who won’t sit still or teenagers who think photos are embarrassing, I’ve got you.
During Your Session
There are no stiff poses here. I’ll guide your family into light and connection, then step back and let the real moments happen. We might do a few prompts a piggyback ride, a chase around the field, a whisper in mom’s ear but mostly I’m documenting what’s already there. Sessions typically run 60–90 minutes, giving everyone time to warm up and settle in.
After Your Session
Your gallery will be ready within 2–3 weeks, delivered through a private online gallery where you can download, share, and order prints directly. Every image is carefully edited in my signature warm, natural styleWhen you book a session with a Chicago outdoor family photographer, you aren’t just getting a gallery of images; you are getting a relaxed experience.
Why Outdoor Family Photography in Chicago?
There’s something about natural light and open space that brings families to life. Studio photography has its place, but outdoor sessions allow for movement, spontaneity, and genuine connection. The changing seasons in Chicago also mean every session has its own personality — the lush greens of summer, the warm golds of fall, the soft whites of early spring.
Outdoor sessions also mean your children aren’t confined to a small space trying to hold a smile. They can run, explore, and forget the camera is even there. Those are the moments worth capturing.
